20 things you didn't know about Windows XP

You've read the reviews and digested the key feature enhancements and operational changes. Now it's time to delve a bit deeper and uncover some of Windows XP's secrets.

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type 'systeminfo'. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type 'systeminfo > info.txt'. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run... and type 'gpedit.msc'; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care -- some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).

3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter 'rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation' in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That's it -- just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include 'eventcreate' and 'eventtriggers' for creating and watching system events, 'typeperf' for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and 'schtasks' for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by/? will give a list of options -- they're all far too baroque to go into here.

6. XP has IP version 6 support -- the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type 'ipv6 install' into Run... (it's OK, it won't ruin your existing network setup) and then 'ipv6 /?' at the command line to find out more. If you don't know what IPv6 is, don't worry and don't bother.

7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using 'taskkill /pid' and the task number, or just 'tskill' and the process number. Find that out by typing 'tasklist', which will also tell you a lot about what's going on in your system.

8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you've got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing 'regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll' at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing 'regsvr32 zipfldr.dll'.

9. XP has ClearType -- Microsoft's anti-aliasing font display technology -- but doesn't have it enabled by default. It's well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. Toenable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect bestresults on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/ControlPanel/Desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who's using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum's real IP address -- they can find this out by going to www.whatismyip.com -- and get them to make sure that they've got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.

11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As... and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/
CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.

13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run... from the start menu and type 'control userpasswords2', which will open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.

14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options... and Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can't see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You'll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.

16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.

17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By... Show In Groups.

18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks -- if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn't, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.

19. Windows key + Break brings up the System Properties dialogue box; Windows key + D brings up the desktop; Windows key + Tab moves through the taskbar buttons.

20. Last but not the least , In Windows XP , XP Stands for experience :)

My New Nokia N70 Music Edition : Review

Recently a bought a new Nokia N70 Music Edition Smart phone. Thanx to my dad and mom ;) I crashed it's OS after 2 days of it's purchase and had to reformat my phone lolz :) Thought to write a review on it.

Check out the best smart phone Nokia has launched:

The Nokia N70 Music Edition is just a slightly modified N70. All black housing, bundled 1 GB RS MMC card, a “music” key instead of the “multimedia key,” and extra themes loaded in the card. Nokia N70 is a mobile phone, which was engineered as an instrument for both work and fun. It offers an excellent phonebook, good organizer functions, and active cooperation with PC. It gets you on the web, downloads emails, views documents in Microsoft Office or PDF format, and connects you to the 3G network. A gud headphones with music keys comes equipped with the phone, so that you can enjoy best of music. It is all about compromising though, for small display and keypad are always just a substitute. They can never offer the comfort provided by the bigger devices.

As for the fun part, the users of Symbian smartphones do not need to make compromises. Nokia is equipped with a very good camera. It has an advanced video application, plays MP3 files and features a built-in radio. The game offer is also quite extensive. What could be considered a disadvantage is the fact that N70 does not offer a standard use of games for the N-Gage game console. I tried two demo versions, but they refused to even start. According to various discussion forums on the net, most users experience the same difficulties.

I installed many applications to improve the usability and add fun to my N70. Every application worked like a charm on the Symbian S60 2nd Edition OS ( i.e. OS of N70 ) , except one which crashed my phone. I was then forced to hard format my phone but thanx to the PC suite utility that comes bundled with N70, everything was back in place just in few minutes.

The last benefit of using an N70 instead of a flashier phone: less chance of being stolen, and less hassle if lost. I hope!

Key Kool Features :

  • Attractive design
  • High-quality construction
  • Good keypad
  • Symbian OS 2nd Edition
  • Active stand-by mode
  • Enough memory space ( 1Gb Memory Card Included )
  • Dedicated music key
  • 2 megapixel and up to 20x digital zoom + 0.3 MP Camera
  • Create sideshows complete with music
  • Send and receive emails and attachments
  • 3G support and video calls
  • Built-in radio
  • Dedicated shutter key and camera activation slide
  • Settings for night, brightness adjustment, image quality, self-timer, white balance settings, and color tones
  • Flash modes: on, off, automatic, anti red-eyeMusic player: MP3, AAC, RealAudio and other formats
  • Music player: MP3, AAC, RealAudio and other formats
  • Downloadable Java & Symbian applications
  • Voice Features: voice dialing, voice commands, voice recorder
  • Advanced contacts database with support for multiple phone and email details per entry, also supports thumbnail pictures and groups
  • Talktime: up to 3.5 hours
  • Battery standby: up to 11 days
Key Disadvantages :

  • Lower speed in comparison to common mobile phones
  • Red button closes applications
  • Bad-quality macro mode
  • No infrared port
  • Many old cons have been left unsolved
  • Small keys ( Main problem with all N series phones !!! )
  • No repeat alarm reminder
If you are thinking to buy a smart phone and have to convince your parents for the same, go for N70. You won't regret ;)

Remove Autoplay Harddisk Virus : "Hacked by Godzilla Virus"

Most of my friends on my network always has this problem. Yesterday this problem even creped into my PC. This problem is named as "Hacked by Godzilla Virus" by the people. It creates a auto play option on the right click menu of your hard disk drives making you unable to open them by double clicking. However you can open them by right click -> Open or Explore. It changes the text of Internet Explorer title bar to "Hacked by Godzilla".

Now here is the solution :

  • Go to any folder. In that on the top menu go to Tools -> Folder Options.
  • A window pops up after you click on folder options. In that window go to View tab and select the option Show hidden files and folders. Now uncheck the option Hide protected Operating system files. Click Ok.
  • Now Open your drives (By right click and select Explore. Don't double click!). Delete autorun.inf and MS32DLL.dll.vbs or MS32DLL.dll (use Shift+Delete as it deletes files forever.) in all drives include Handy Drive and Floppy disk.
  • Open folder C:\WINDOWS to delete MS32DLL.dll.vbs or MS32DLL.dll (Use Shift+Delete )
  • Go to start --> Run --> Regedit and the Registry editor will open
  • Now navigate in the left pane as follows: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Current Version -> Run. Now delete the entry MS32DLL (Use Delete key on keyboard)
  • Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Microsoft -> Internet Explorer -> Main and delete the entry Window Title “Hacked by Godzilla”
  • Now open the group policy editor by typing gpedit.msc in Start -> run and pressing enter.
  • Go to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System. Double Click on entry Turn Off Autoplay then Turn Off Autoplay Properties will display. Do as follows:
    • SelectEnabled
    • Select All drives
    • Click OK
  • Now go to start --> Run and type msconfig there and press Enter. A system configuration utility dialogue will open.
  • Go to startup tab in it and uncheck MS32DLL. Now click Ok and when the system configuration utility asks for restart, click on exit without restart.
  • Now go to Tools --> Folder Options on the top menu of some folder again and select the Do not show Hidden files and check Hide operating system files.
  • Go to your recyclable bin and empty it to prevent any possibility of MS322DLL.dll.vbs lying there.
  • Now restart your PC once and you can now open your hard disk drives by double clicking on them.

Njoy your system as before :)

Google's Page Rank Explained

Factors that can increase your Google PageRank :

Now the Google PageRank algorithm can be very complexed, but yet friendly invention. Here is a list of things that could help boost you Google PageRank, with a rating scale beside it of how important we think it is.

* Update Pages Frequently 2/10
* Add Pages Frequently 4/10
* Good Neighborhood Directories with high PageRank Levels 7/10
* Monster Websites 7/10
* Quality Inbound links 8/10
* Quality Relevant Links 9/10
* No Broken Links 5/10
* Article Submissions (this can increase your PageRank by getting more inbound links)
* All these put together 10/10

Factors that can decrease your Google PageRank :

* Bad inbound links such as Poker, Porn, Sex, Drugs, or anything to that nature
* Link spamming
* Bad Content
* Lots of broken links
* SEO Black Hat Techniques

How Google PageRank is Calculated :

Okay now we are to the Google PageRank Calculations, this is very simple so pay attention, I learned it over night, not really. The factors about Google PageRank Calculation is that no one knows exactly how it works, but people have discovered over time somewhat how it works, but lets get into an example.

PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + ... + PR(tn)/C(tn))

Above is a Google PageRank algo. that was released in the development of Google algo. Thats right the actualy algo equitation . Which google is not telling us what it does, but that does not matter because the equatation is good enough.

In the equation 't1 - tn' are pages linking to page A, 'C' is the number of outbound links that a page has and 'd' is a damping factor, usually set to 0.85.

A more simpler way to think of it is :

A page's PageRank = 0.15 + 0.85 * (a "share" of the PageRank of every page that links to it)

Share = The linking page's PageRank is divided by the number of outbound links

A page "votes" an amount of PageRank onto each page that it links to. The amount of PageRank that it has to vote with is a little less than its own PageRank value (its own value * 0.85). This value will be shared equally between all pages

Therefore; it would be better to get a page linked to you that has a PageRank of 5 with 2 outbound links then it would be to have a page linked to you with a PageRank of 8 with 500 outbound links, but don't get me wrong. It would be better to have both pages linked to you, but if you was to take your choice, think about it.

Now the Google PageRank algorithm is based between a pr of 1 to 10, but many people believe that numbers are set to a algo logarithmic scale. Which there is a very good reason to believe this, but no one knows for sure outside of google, now there has probably been people that have figured it out somewhat, but to be sure, you would of had to write the Google PageRank algorithm your self.

Find who is Invisible On Yahoo Messenger

Many people normally go to invisible mode when they don't want to chat with everyone or when they are busy with work . You know some one's ID and you want to check whether they are online or not ?? How will you detect a invisible user on Yahoo Messenger ??

Many methods are already available on the net at this moment like using Doodle IMvironment, Shealth settings check, Voice Chat and Conference Invitation ( You can use these methods in yahoo messenger only and no need to use a 3rd party site or program ) . Apart from these there are some sites and programs that lets you know directly about the person is invisible or not . I'm discussing few here :

(1) Invisible.ir - Simply the best site in this category that works each time. Must try this Fast And Accurate Yahoo Invisible User Detector. You can also check multiple Yahoo users at once and detect a users invisibility by just giving his/her main Yahoo ID.

(2) Buddy Spy - This is not a site, but Buddy Spy is a little program that you can download and install on your comp. It suggests that it’s “simply the best in invisible detection”! I’m not so sure about that, but I’ve heard it works most of the time. But looks a bit complicated to work on.

(3) Invisible Scanner - Never tried it , but still it claims to do the same. Go check it yourself :)(4) Xeeber.com - Frankly speaking I tried it many times, but each time it just says SERVER BUSY. Not much impressed with it.

If you have any other great way to find those hidden creatures , then post it as a comment . Njoy !!!

Find who has blocked you on GTalk

Yes , it is possible to find if someone has blocked you on Gtalk by a great little instant messaging utility, Pidgin . If you don't have it Download it from here (10.8 Mb ) .

You first need to configure Pidgin with your GTalk account and believe me after seeing Pidgin features you will be compelled to switch to Pidgin . If you are not sure how to configure Pidgin with Gtalk , read about this here .

Ok, now when you are aware of how to configure Pidgin to work with Google Talk, I’ll guide how to make smart use of Pidgin to identify who has blocked you on Google Talk.

It’s very simple. Just follow the steps:-

1- Log in to your Gmail account on Pidgin.

2- Go to “Buddies” -> “Show Offline Buddies“. (A person who has blocked you must be showing offline to you. So you need to make all offline friends visible)

3- Now all your contacts are visible to you. Pick any one of those.
4- Right Click on your chosen contact name and select “Get Info“. ( Names And Id Hidden due to Privacy Implications )

It will show you the brief information of your contact. Now, if any of your contact has blocked you on Google Talk, you will not be able to see his/her profile.

6- Select a contact who you think may have blocked you. Again, Right Click on his/her name and select “Get Info“. You will not see anything. Not even the contact’s name. ( Names And Id Hidden due to Privacy Implications )

This shows in turn that the following contact has blocked you and doesn't wish to talk to you . Solve out your problems soon. :P

How to configure Pidgin to work with Google Talk

Pidgin is an instant messaging program for Windows, Linux, BSD, and other Unixes. You can talk to your friends using AIM, ICQ, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, QQ, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, MySpaceIM, and Zephyr.

Pidgin can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AIM, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time.

Pidgin supports many features of the various networks, such as file transfer, away messages, and typing notification. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, iconify on away, spell checking, tabbed conversations, and more.

HOW TO CONFIGURE PIDGIN WITH GTALK :

1- Get Pidgin and Install it on your computer.
2- Select 'Accounts' -> 'Manage' -> 'Add'

This will open a new window- “Add Account”

3- From the drop down box choose XMPP as the Protocol.
4- In case of Screen name enter your Gmail Id (e.g. - guptashubham123).
5- Type gmail.com as the Domain/Server.
6- In Resource Field enter Home.
7- Type your Gmail Password in the Password Field.
8- Choose any Nickname (e.g. - NeO) as Local alias.

That’s it you are almost then.

Now, if you are behind a proxy server that is blocking Pidgin to connect to Internet and to log in your account, just follow the below mentioned steps. I am sure you’ll be able to run Pidgin freely like I do.

Click on the “Advanced” tab in Add/Modify Account window and do the following:

1- Force old (port 5223) SSL: Checked

2- Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted streams: Un-Checked
3- Connect Port: 443
4- Connect Server: talk.google.com
5- Proxy Type: Choose your protocol and enter desired proxy settings. In my case it’s HTTP, Host: 10.10.11.20 and Port: 3128. If you don’t know about this, select Proxy Type as “Use Global Proxy Settings”.

You are done. Now, you can use Pidgin as much as you like. Njoy !!!

Proxy Server Configuration

If you need to configure a proxy server on multiple computers, or would just like to automate the procedure through the registry then this tip will explain how.

Open the registry ( Start -> Run -> Type 'regedit' -> Press Enter ) and find the key below.

Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]

Value Name: ProxyServer
Data Type: REG_SZ
Data: Server:Port

The values that configure the Internt proxy setup are located in this key. To change which proxy server is used, modify the value of 'ProxyServer' to equal the server and port combination. For example if your proxy server was called \\PROXY and it was running on port 80 then the setting would equal 'PROXY:80'.

You may also need to set the value of 'ProxyEnable' to equal '1' for proxy enabled or '0' for disabled. Setting the value of 'ProxyOverride' to equal '' will stop internal addresses from going through the proxy.

Note: Changes should take effect immediately.

RunAsDate : Run Trial Software For Infinite Period

Description:

RunAsDate is a small utility that allows you to run a program in the date and time that you specify. This utility doesn't change the current systemdate and time of your computer, but it only injects the date/time thatyou specify into the desired application. You can run multiple applications simultaneously, each application workswith different date and time, while the real date/time of your systemcontinues to run normally.

Using this software you can run trail period softwares for infinite time by manupulating the date and time.

How does it work ?

RunAsDate intercepts the kernel API calls that returns the current dateand time (GetSystemTime, GetLocalTime, GetSystemTimeAsFileTime), andreplaces the current date/time with the date/time that you specify.

System Requirements:

RunAsDate works under Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, andWindows Vista. Older versions of Windows are not supported.

Using RunAsDate:

RunAsDate doesn't require any installation process or additional DLLfiles. In order to start using it, simply copy the executable file(RunAsDate.exe) to any folder you like, and run it.In the main window of RunAsDate, select the desired date and time and theapplication that you want to run. What are Patches???

A Patch, is a small piece of software designed to update or fix problems with a computer program or its supporting data. This includes fixing bugs, replacing graphics and improving the usability or performance. Though meant to fix problems, poorly designed patches can sometimes introduce new problems (Refer to software regressions).

Patch management is the process of using a strategy and plan of what patches should be applied to which systems at a specified time.

Programmers publish and apply patches in various forms.

  • As proprietary software authors withhold their source code, their patches are distributed as binary executables instead of source. This type of patch modifies the program executable—the program the user actually runs—either by modifying the binary file to include the fixes or by completely replacing it.

Patches can also circulate in the form of source code modifications. In these cases, the patches consist of textual differences between two source code files. These types of patches commonly come out of open source projects. In these cases, developers expect users to compile the new or changed files themselves.

  • Because the word "patch" carries the connotation of a small fix, large fixes may use different nomenclature. Bulky patches or patches that significantly change a program may circulate as "service packs" or as "software updates". Microsoft Windows NT and its successors (including Windows 2000, Windows XP, and later versions) use the "service pack" terminology.

In several Unix-like systems, particularly Linux, updates between releases are delivered as new software packages. These updates are in the same format as the original installation so they can be used either to update an existing package in-place (effectively patching) or be used directly for new installations.

Modifying the Internet Explorer Partial Address Feature

The Internet Explorer partial address feature, scans common domains for a match to a keyword entered in the Address bar. The feature is limited by default to searching only .COM, .EDU and .ORG domains. This tip allows you to add new domains and modify their priorities.

The values listed under the key below control which domains are auto searched for matches to the keyword entered in the Address bar.

To add a new domain simply create a new string value and name it a sequential number (e.g. '7'). Set the data of the new value to equal the domain you want to search, for example to also search .DE domains add a new value of 'www.%s.de' (%s represents the keyword).

To change their priorities, simply rename the values with sequential numbers where '1' is the site to be checked first.

Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\UrlTemplate]

Tech Tutor Video Releases Vista Version

Introduction to Computers and the Internet featuring Vista is an expansion of their popular XP version with the same title.

Seattle natives, Brett and RMegan Stewart started Tech Tutor Video after Brett, a software systems consultant, spent the 2004 holiday season helping aunts, uncles, parents and in-laws solve technology issues that spanned Windows XP, wireless networking, internet searching and anti-virus protection. "I noticed a striking similarity in the kinds of questions and concerns from both of our families," said Brett Stewart. "They were looking for the simplest approach to performing specific tasks. No one was very receptive when I mentioned the availability of beginning computer books. They wanted simple explanations while watching the steps performed on the computer." This "tell and show" approach is the basis for Tech Tutor Video's instruction style.

New to the Vista version are numerous exercise walkthroughs. “Many XP users would pause our content to try the tasks described. We’ve since incorporated exercises directly into our material allowing users to pause and re-create the task just described by following the exercise steps.”

Covering more than just Vista, these lesson samples include: email, internet basics, security, best of the web, configuration, maintenance,  blogging and much much more.  Great for beginners and pros.

Make Internet Explorer Intercepts the FTP Command

When you enter a FTP command such as "FTP ftp.regedit.com" IE launches instead of the DOS based FTP program.

To disable this behavior, use Regedit ( Start -> Run -> type 'regedit' ) to find the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes] , and delete the value of "ftp".

To re-enable, create a REG_SZ value of "ftp" and set the data to "ftp://".

uTorrent Tweaks

uTorrent was very slow for me until recently I applied a few tweaks. Here’s what I did.

Note: Some of the settings mentioned below are optimized for 256k connection. If you want to calculate the optimal settings for your connection, check at the end of this tutorial. But I suggest you to read the entire tutorial for guidance on other settings.

First go to Options>Preferences>Network
Under ‘Port used for incomming connections’, enter any port number. It is best to use a port number above 10000. I use 45682.

Randomize port each time utorrent starts: UNCHECKED. I leave this unchecked because I have a router. If you do not have a router or a firewall, and want extra security, check this option.

Enable UPnP port mapping (Windows Xp or later only): UNCHECKED. I leave this unchecked because I have experienced it slowing down speeds. It is not needed if you manually port forward.

Add utorrent to Windows Firewall exceptions (Windows XP SP2 or later only): UNCHECKED (do this only if you have windows firewall disabled)

Global Maximum upload rate (kb/s): [0: unlimited]: 22 (for 256k connection)

Protocol Encryption: ENABLED. I would recommend everyone to enable this. This can help increase speeds with many ISPs.

Allow incoming Legacy Connections: CHECKED

Options>Preferences>Torrents
Global Maximum Number of Connections: 130 (for 256k connection)This number should not be set too low or the number of connections made to your torrents will be limited. Setting it too high may cause too much bandwidth to be used and can cause slowdowns.
Maximum Number of connected peers per torrent: 70 (for 256k connection)If you see that the peers connected to a specific torrent are exactly this number, or very close, increase this number to improve speeds.

Number of upload slots per torrent: 3 (for 256k connection)This depends on how much you want to upload to other users. Do not set too low or it may affect download speeds.
Use additional upload slots if upload speed <90%: title="Click to Enlarge" href="http://www.johntp.com/wp-content/uploads/torrents.jpg">
Options>Preferences>Advanced
net.max_halfopen: 50

If you use Windows XP SP2, patch tcpip.sys with LvlLord’s Event ID 4226 Patcher to get better performance.

DO NOT CHANGE THIS OPTION unless you have Windows XP SP2 and have patched tcpip.sys.
You can also patch tcpip.sys with xp-Antispy
If you have a firewall, Open up the options/preferences/settings for the firewall - usually your firewall will have an icon to click in the taskbar
Look for the keywords “allow list” or “programs”
Add the application you want to give access to the internet
Make sure to save your settings when you are done
If you have a router

Go to start>run>type cmd, press enter>type ipconfig, press enter
Remember both your ip address and your default gateway
Type in your default gateway into your default browser, a password prompt may come up. The default username and password are admin for my router
Under ‘Applications’ fill out one line for each p2p client you use
You need to use your ip address, the correct port range and set either tcp or udp
You can find and change the ports in the actual p2p client’s settings, just make sure they are the same in the router
Most p2p apps need both tcp and udp checked, if you are not sure check your p2p client’s FAQ
Save your settings
Check PortForward.com to forward ports for uTorrent.
Some of the settings I mentioned above are relative to my bandwidth.
How to calculate optimal settings for your connection
In order to apply the following tips you need to know your maximum upload and download speeds. You can test your bandwidth over here.
Maximum upload speed
If you use your Maximum upload speed, there won’t be not enough space left for the files you are downloading. So you have to cap your upload speed.
This is how I calculate my optimal upload speed…
upload speed * 80%
Maximum download speed
Setting your maximum download speed to unlimited will hurt your connection. So use this to calculate your optimal setting.
download speed * 90%
Maximum connected peers per torrent
upload speed * 1.3
Maximum upload slots
1 + (upload speed / 6)
Disable Windows Firewall
Windows Firewall hates P2P and so disable it and get yourself a decent firewall like Zone Alarm.

Reset / Change / Hack Windows Password

Well, this trick applies only when you are have administrator rights on that system or the user has left his / her account logged in . It is also possible to hack someone's windows password even if u don't have administrator rights or even if u don't have his / her account logged in , but sorry can't make it public as it is against ethics . I'm discussing here 3 methods , all are equivalent .

Method 1:
  • Go to Command window by Start -> Run and type in 'cmd'
  • Type " Net User " and hit Enter. It will show you the list of the user accounts in your PC.
  • Now type "Net User username *" . [For e.g If you want to change administrator password , type Net user Administrator * .
  • It will prompt you for entering the new password.
  • Enter new password and press enter
If the user name has spaces in between , try using second and third methods.

Method 2:
  • Goto run window and type in "control userpasswords2" .
  • You will see a list of user accounts , click on the user account and then on "Reset Password".
Method 3:
  • Goto Control Panel and click on Administrative Tools -> Computer Management.
  • A window will open up. Under System Tools choose Local User Group -> Users.
  • You will see a list of user account. Right click on any and select set password.

Using Google to download MP3 songs

Well people u might be wondering how that's possible but it's damn easy, just follow the instructions that follow.

There’s a lot you can do with Google if you can take advantage of it’s advanced search features.

Expanding on this tip which shows you how to find music in open directories, here’s a step-by-step walkthrough on how to use Firefox Smart Keyword searches to speed up the process.
All you need to do is:

1. Create a bookmark in Firefox

2. Use the URL as given in the following line

http://www.google.com/search?q=-inurl%3A(htm%7Chtml%7Cphp)+
intitle%3A%22index+of%22+%2B%22last+modified%22+
%2B%22parent+directory%22+%2Bdescription+%2Bsize+
%2B(wma%7Cmp3%7Cogg)+"%s%"

as the bookmark location in your Firefox bookmarks (like in the pic above)
3. Assign a keyword to it - eg. music
4. Type the keyword (eg. music) followed by the search term (eg. beatles) directly into the address bar (NOT the search box). For example… type in music beatles , and Google will search open directories for Beatles music files that you can download.

By the way, I’m assuming you already own the media you will be downloading …
