Installing Mac OS X on a Normal PC / Non Apple PC

The news is not new, but nowadays a lot of tutorials about how to install Apple’s OS X on an x86 computer are available, and the procedure is now followable by (almost) any PC user.

I want to remember to everybody that it’s illegal to install and use OS X without a valid licence. I take no responsability for any invalid use of this tutorial.
In addiction, please take note that the following procedure may cause a data loss, so do only if you know what are you doing.

We’ll see how to install OS X on a Windows XP machine, on a 7Gb dedicated partition. So you have to prepare your hard disk with:

- The first, primary and bootable partition with a normal Win XP installation;
- A second empty NTFS primary partition;
- Any other partition you like.

Please refer to other documentations if you don’t know how to deal with hard drive partitions. You can use, for example, Partition Magic to change your HD partitions… anyway if you are not experienced in partitioning, my tip is stop here.

Then, you have to get some software:

1. An Ubuntu Linux Live CD: you can get it, or you can download it. It’s free. A valid alternative to Ubuntu that I found is Knoppix STD: use it if you’ve problems with Ubuntu;
2. VmWare Workstation it’s a commercial application, but a free trial is available;
3. The Deadmoo’s OS X Linux distro: this is available on P2P networks, usually under tiger-x86.tar.bz2 filename. I want to remember again that you’ve no right to download and to use it, if you don’t have a valid Apple’s OS X Licence.

- Boot from Ubuntu (of Knoppix) Live CD;
- Open a Terminal Window, get administrative rights (it should be sufficient to enter the command “sudo su“)… and type:
cfdisk /dev/hda
- The CFdisk utility will start: choose the partition where you want to install OS X (it should be the second one, but please make attention!) and choose “TYPE”. Now write “AF” (without quotes, of course) as type, and confirm changes choosing “WRITE”. The partition you chose will be erased and it’s type will be set to AF (Apple Format).

Now reboot, go back to Windows XP, install and open VmWare.
Create a new “FreeBSD” virtual machine. When asked to choose the primary hard drive for the virtual machine, choose your phisical hard disk; Also add a second hard drive to the virtual machine: the virtual drive inside Deadmoo’s archive; insert your Ubuntu CD and make sure that your phisical DVD/CD-rom reader is enabled in the virtual machine.
Then start the virtual machine and press on ESC as the machine begin, to enter boot menu: choose to boot from CD. Ubuntu should start booting in the virtual machine’s window. On the contrary, if you see Windows starting, immediately turn off the virtual machine and check CD-Rom settings (in this case, the CD boot has not started and your Windows XP is going to start into itself!).

When Ubuntu is ready, open a terminal window and type a command like this:

dd if=/dev/hdb1 of=/dev/hda2/ bs=8192
hdb (2nd hard drive) should be the mounted Deadmoo’s image: our source;
hda2 should be the 2nd partition of the 1st hard drive (our phisical one): the destination.
CHANGE HDB1 and HDA2 with YOUR SETTINGS!

If you’re not sure about partitions, type:
fdisk /dev/hda -l
to get a list of your connected hard drives and relative partitions identifiers.

The process will take about 5-10 minutes. At the end, you can shut down the virtual machine.

Download this file.
It contains a file named chain0. Extract it to the root of your C:\ partition and add the following line:
C:\chain0=”Mac OS X”
to your C:\boot.ini file.

Now reboot your PC and choose Mac OS X at the boot list screen. Then the “Darwin boot” will ask you to select the partition with Mac OS X installed: select it with arrow keys.

Now try to type -s and then enter. If everything goes ok, at the prompt type:
sh /etc/rc
passwd curtis
passwd root
and enter your new password when asked. If anything is wrong, try to boot with -x or without arguments.

Please take note that sometimes it’s needed to boot several times (with -s, -x, or with no arguments) to get OS X work… I don’t know the reason, but it happens!

NOTE : This method is not an emulation (like others that run Mac OS X into a virtual machine. Here VmWare is used only to transfer the OS X image to the 2nd partition). Mac OS runs directly on the x86 machine, so speed is the best you can get.

Of course our PCs are not exactly the hardware thought by Apple’s developers, so speed is not the same of an original Macintosh.

Skype Celebrates It's Rocking 5th Birthday

As Skype CEO Josh Silverman announced on Skype’s blog , it was Skype’s 5th birthday yesterday. It was back on August 29, 2003 that the first public beta of Skype was announced.

Happy Birthday, Skype!

I also huge fans of Skype and so congratulate them on their fifth birthday and look forward to seeing what they do next. Just want to wish Skype a Happy 5th Birthday. Skype has helped make VoIP a household name and has carried more VoIP minutes than any other VoIP software application out there. Well done Skype.

Skype was founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. Skype created a little piece of software that makes communicating with people around the world easy and fun. With Skype you can say hello or share a laugh with anyone, anywhere. And if both of you are on Skype, it’s free.

Skype is available in 28 languages and is used in almost every country around the world. Skype generates revenue through its premium offerings such as making and receiving calls to and from landline and mobile phones, as well as voicemail and call forwarding. Skype, based in Luxembourg, has relationships with a growing network of hardware and software providers and is an eBay company.

Skype is the best example of Voice 2.0. Unfortunately, eBay is all about trying to be 1.0 and that's the disconnect.

Nokia E71 : Slimmest QWERTY Smart Phone

The Nokia E71 has arrived here at the Nokia Guide and having just a weekend to play with the new enterpriselicious QWERTY device so far, it’s not enough to write a full-blown Mega Review, but how about a few random thoughts and opinion based on my usage for now? The E71 arrived in a box similar to what we are used to with Nseries devices, except for two interesting things: a much much smaller box and using the color red as an “accent color”. Normally we are used to the grey, white and even pinkish Nseries, but red for the Eseries?! As you’ll soon see, it’s not only a part of the box that’s red.

Nokia claims the E71 is the slimmest full Qwerty keyboard phone available, and at just 57mm wide, we're inclined to believe it. It's 11mm thick. The handset is even thinner than the normally svelte Blackberry Curve with its now rather portly-seeming 60mm dimension.

Despite the E71's thinness, its metal case adds a certain weight and gravitas, though at 127g it's hardly excessive. It's on the wide side, of course, to make room for that keyboard, but though it's necessarily tightly packed, the curved, rubberised buttons, which sit slightly proud of the face, are easy enough to use.

Nokia E71Nokia Battery (BP-4L)Nokia Charger (AC-5)Nokia connectivity cable (CA-101)Nokia Headset (HS-47)Nokia Eseries LanyardNokia Eseries PouchUser Guide, Quick Start Guide and other documentation2GB microSD card With this Nokia Eseries device, people can get reliable real-time access to their email, calendar, contacts and tasks, as well as download attachments like Word, Excel, Powerpoint or PDF files directly to their devices. The Nokia E71 supports email accounts from more than a thousand internet service providers (ISPs) around the world, as well as Gmail, Yahoo! mail and Hotmail. Additionally, the Nokia E71 supports the Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email solution as well as third party email solutions like System Seven and Visto Mobile. The device comes with the new switch mode that allows people easily to switch between personal and work home screens.

There’s a 320×240 screen on the E71 and it looks very sharp. It’s not as bright as the N95, but it’s very clear and easy on the eyes. Screen real estate isn’t a problem at all as we find it more pleasurable to use than an N95. Pictures and video look very detailed and clean. There’s a decent amount of contrast when looking at media, and you’ll especially appreciate the screen during some heavy web browsing.

We also love this device's sheer speed. The 369MHz ARM processor is more than enough to make the Symbian S60-based operating system race along and we were never left staring vacantly at the screen, waiting for a task to complete.

Another point in the E71's favour is its battery life. We used the device intensively over three days - far more than anyone would in general - and it just kept on going. Under light use it will easily last a week, and we'd expect a life of three-to-five days for most people.

That's astonishingly impressive for such a slim phone, especially as it includes battery-draining technologies like GPS, 3G and WLAN. And, unlike the much-lauded iPhone, you can replace the 1,500mAh battery with ease.

Key features:

  • Quad-band GSM support
  • 3G with HSDPA 3.6Mbps support
  • Landscape 2.36" 16M color display of QVGA resolution
  • Comfortable full QWERTY keypad
  • Convenient business-minded shortcut keys
  • Symbian 9.2 OS, S60 UI with FP1 (topped with some FP2 goodies)
  • 369 MHz ARM 11 CPU and 128 MB of SDRAM
  • Wi-Fi
  • Built-in GPS receiver, A-GPS
  • 3.15 megapixel auto focus camera with LED flash
  • 110 MB of internal memory, microSD expansion, ships with a 2GB card
  • Slimmest smartphone to-date, slimmest Wi-Fi and/or GPS handset to-date
  • Stainless steel casing
  • Standard 2.5mm audio jack
  • Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP support
  • microUSB v2.0
  • FM radio
  • Remote Wipe
  • Provider-independent VoIP support
  • Infrared port
  • Great battery life
  • Office document editor
  • Rich retail package

Main disadvantages:

  • Below average camera performance
  • Video recording maxes out at QVGA@15fps
  • No dedicated camera key
  • Smaller display than its predecessor
  • Cheap-looking power key
  • No RDS for the FM radio

The Nokia E71 is among the best-equipped Nokia smartphones to-date. It's quick and responsive and carries a remarkable feature load for its compact size. Connectivity is at its highest with the Nokia E71 boasting every single connectivity option, which is currently available. Add the GPS receiver and the slim metallic design and you've got yourself a smartphone that walks and talks high-end.

There's a lot to really like in this latest Eseries miniaturised masterpiece. The build quality is fabulous, the styling striking (within the qwerty world, anyway), the communications options vast, text input potentially fast and flexible, the software support and built-in enterprise features almost second to none. And all in something that's as thin as your average feature phone. Which is almost certainly enough to ensure strong sales to the usual Eseries audience.

The E71 fills a very important gap in the line up of 2nd generation Eseries device. While the E90 is an extremely capable device, its form factor and price point make it rather niche. The E51 is a great entry level enterprise device, but lacks the power that a full size keyboard provides. The completed portfolio of 2nd generation Eseries devices (E51, E66, E71, E90) has a real sense of maturity about it. This comes from the hardware (variety across the range, build quality and feature set), but also the software - the enterprise applications, and crucially, the enterprise device management options have been significantly improved. The Nokia E71 and its sisters look set to give Nokia's Enterprise rivals (Blackberry and Windows Mobile - and, yes, in time the iPhone) some sleepless nights.

A tougher call is for those buying the E71 for personal use, as the smallest qwerty-equipped S60 device. While the keyboard is very useable for anyone with nimble fingers, I found the multimedia side of the E71 disappointing, from the relatively low (compared to other recent S60 mainstays like 2006's N95) camera quality to the undistinguished audio and video playback. The E71 is better than the E61i, hugely so, but in truth I'd hoped for a little bit more, given that this is now mid 2008. And yes, I know the E71 is built to come in at an attractive price, but... Don't let these slight negatives put you off investigating this great smartphone all rounder though.

Those who saw the Nokia E71 on The Gadget Show will remember it equalled the Apple iPhone 3G’s 4/5 rating, and who are we to disagree. It may have a smaller screen at 2.3” and the browsing may not be quite as intuitive, but in every other way it equals or betters the iPhone. The E71 is a tremendously capable business device while not skimping on the fun and games. Anyone who prefers the feel of a real QWERTY keyboard under their thumbs should be placing the E71 firmly at the top of their shopping list.

The Good : Up to 8 GB in an easy-to-access, external microSD slot. Quick and seamless OS. GPS, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth (you name it, it’s basically got it). Vivid screen (even in direct sunlight). Textured stainless steel backing prevents slippage. Relatively lightweight (127 grams = 6 grams lighter than iPhone). Hit any letter on the QWERTY pad and predictive text calls up that section of your address book.

The Bad : No standard 3.5mm headphone jack. 3.2-megapixel camera’s optics could be better. LED flash could be way better. N-Gage gaming platform not available. Screen’s wide, but not wide enough to do a feature-length film justice. For $500, you could get TWO 8-GB, 3G JesusPhones (with $100 left over to put towards AT&T’s data plan).

YouTube Puts AdSense in Embedded Players

Video units are a new way to enrich your site content -- and earn more -- with relevant video from YouTube partners on an embedded, customizable video player. When you place a video unit on your site, you can choose the video content in several ways: by picking content categories, by select individual content providers, or by having video automatically targeted to your site content.

The videos you display will be monetized with relevant ads, too. The video unit displays companion and text overlay ads that are highly targeted and non-intrusive. Plus, to help integrate video units into your site further, you can also customize the color scheme and layout of the video unit.

The ads monetize strategy allow you inserting AdSense text-based advertising into the video player. You won’t see any no intrusive ads pop up and block the video you’re watching, and you won’t be asked to pause your video to watch another video. Instead, you’ll just see relevant text ads above your video.Beside that, You can embed AdSense units into Youtube players where you can select the categories to include and exclude according to your target audience.

Google is finally rolling out what many expected it would do with its YouTube acquisition -- select video clips will be shown across the AdSense network, along with advertising designed to increase the company's share of a lucrative market.

Web sites will be able to get any kind of content they want on their sites and get a cut of the revenue from accompanying ads. This will boost Google's already successful online ad business and give publishers a way to earn more money on their sites. Soon, we'll see Google distributing all of the content a Web site could want.

"It's an interesting move for Google to leverage the AdSense network beyond pure advertising," said Greg Sterling of Sterling Market Intelligence. "It's an interesting video monetisation, as well, with ads being drawn from the normal AdSense pool."

Google has been experimenting with distributing video and video ads on its AdSense publisher network, but with mixed results. The company has tested distributing in-stream video ads and in-stream video clips with bundled ads, but apparently finds that banner and text ads work best. Google also offers click-to-play video ads, but with no content attached.

Monetization of YouTube has always been the big question since Google Acquired the site. While other video hosting companies sought content first and then tried to build out their ad networks, it's only logical that the biggest online ad network in the world would fold the best content from the biggest video site in the world into its offerings.

The results could be interesting: if these are the typical Pay Per Click ads (probably a safe assumption), revenues will be low. If they are pay-per-view, however (click the banner to view a video ad in the player), the results could be better.

Here is a screenshot about the Youtube Adsense Player:

Google quietly launches AdSense for Feeds

AdSense for feeds allows web publishers to earn by placing targeted Google ads in their feeds. AdSense for feeds works the way the rest of the AdSense program works: by delivering ads that are relevant to your content and your readers.

I noticed a new option in my AdSense account: AdSense for feeds, a program that displays contextual and placement-targeted ads in FeedBurner feeds. FeedBurner announced in May that AdSense for Feeds will be available to a small number of publishers and now it seems that everyone can use it.

FeedBurner has recently closed FAN, its advertising network. "No new applications for FAN publishers are being accepted and we expect the broad variety of options provided through AdSense (including the new AdSense for Feeds product, powered with FeedBurner feeds) will give publishers valuable new revenue-earning potential," says a FeedBurner/Google employee.

Like other AdSense ads, feed ads can be paid in two ways: by click, or by impression. Feed ads can also be targeted in two ways.

  • Contextually targeted to the content in your feed
  • Targeted by advertisers to your specific feed when you set up an ad placement

You can control the frequency, appearance, and positioning of Google ads in your feeds. The ad size is automatically determined based on where your feed is appearing.

Enter AdSense for feeds. The idea is simple: advertisers have their ads placed in the most appropriate feed articles; publishers are paid for their original content; readers see relevant advertising - and in the long run, more quality feeds to choose from. Given the great flexibility that feeds can offer, it's essential to get the model right, especially so that readers are satisfied.

Once integrated into publishers' RSS feeds, it'll serve up contextually-related advertising based around the content, helping publishers make money off the growing number of users accessing their site through RSS readers instead of the site where page and ad views have been factors in revenue.

For users who did not have access to the AdSense for Feeds menu in Google's AdSense, it's a pretty straightforward setup. Publishers can set ad frequency, placement, and have it only add them on content that's over a certain size. It also employs the same "channels" tool that lets you later track ad campaigns on certain sections of your site.

How to play .rmvb files on UBUNTU

This tutorial will take you step by step through installing all of the software necessary to play rmvb (RealMedia Variable Bitrate) files in Ubuntu Linux.

Though the steps and screenshots are specific to Ubuntu, they will likely be similar for other versions of Linux. With that said, be sure to read the MPlayer README file if you’re not using Ubuntu. Similar to some of the other tutorials on Simplehelp, this is almost certainly not the only way to play .rmvb files in Ubuntu, but it’s the easiest way I could find. If you know of a easier method, by all means please feel free to leave a comment.

1.The first step in playing .rmvb files in Ubuntu is to use the Synaptic Package Manager to install MPlayer. When you mark MPlayer for installation, you’ll be prompted to install additional software packages (if they’re not already installed).

2. After MPlayer has been installed, exit out of the Synaptic Package Manager and visit the MPlayer binary codec download page. Download the codec package for your platform (for example, if you’re using a 32bit Intel or AMD processor, download the Linux x86 package).

Save the file to your desktop (or home folder). Once the download has completed, double-click that file. Select the folder to uncompress, and click the Extract button.

3. Choose a location to extract the files (your desktop is ideal) and again click Extract.

4. Make sure the files extracted correctly. They’ll be in a folder titled essential-date.

5. Open up a Terminal by selecting Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal.

6. Enter the following commands (and your password when prompted):

cd Desktop
cd essential-date

Alienware : Android Phone

Google and Dell are on the point of launching a new mobile phone to run on the Android operating system, probably at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona that’s going on at the moment. Dell have tried to enter the mobile phone market once before but their range of PDAs was a complete flop.

Here’s a concept for a possible Alienware cell phone that could be produced by Dell’s Alienware division. It would feature some nice gaming options, and would run on Google’s Android platform. Dell would produce it under the Alienware banner because let’s face it, Dell Computers aren’t exactly trendy.

Dell have also recently acquired Alienware, the trendiest tech company in the world, an expert in Video, Gaming, and Audio, and a company crying out for a mobile phone.

So here are the first pictures of the Alienware mobile phone!

Dell has been itching to get into the mobile market but their first attempt, a line of PDAs, was a complete flop and has been all but discontinued. Launching their mobile attempts under the Alienware umbrella will give the company the cool, trendy angle that perhaps the Dell branded devices were lacking. Afterall, who wants a Dell phone?

Alienware, meanwhile, is not only well known for being a high performance hardware manufacturer but their designs are innovative and cutting edge. With mobile phone consumers latching on to “what’s cool”, it seems that an Alienware Android phone would be an incredibly smart strategic tactic for Dell marketers.

  • Classic Alienware eye catching design
  • Large screen with high resolution
  • Superb video gaming capability
  • Fantastic Audio
  • Built on the Google Android platform

Spintronics : Magnetic Bars, Magnetic Randon Access Memory (MRAM), Magnetic Computers

Electronics is the branch of engineering dealing with motion of electrons in semiconductors in which conventional microchips rely on transistors, which act like switches that can flip between 1 and 0. Computer designers are trying to pack more computing power onto microchips by assembling transistors closer together. According to Moore’s law transistors in an IC and the processing power doubles every 18 months. At this pace billion transistor IC would be fabricated by 2010, after which quantum effect and heat dissipation can’t be overcome leading to saturation of integration in IC design.

Beyond Moore’s Law –Molecular Scale Electronics (MSE) or SPINTRONICS

‘Spintronics’ or spin electronics deals with electron and the nuclear spin in solid state physics and possible devices that exploit this property. The basic concept is to use the electron spin rather than its charge for representing 1 and 0 resulting in nanoscaling and promising high capacity digital storage devices. Electron rotates either clockwise or anticlockwise with constant frequency on its axis representing 0 and 1 in logical operations.

Fabrication

Basic concept is a thin film gold spin polarizer sandwiched between two semiconductor magnetic material that will filter only one state to pass (only same type of spin polarized electrons) .In these devices an electric field develops at the junction strong enough to pull a pool of spin coherent electrons from one side to another thus no application of external field or potential is required. Two types of technology is currently under study as GMR(giant magnetic resistance) involving development of materials with larger spin polarization of electrons for better spin filtering, while the second involves generation and utilization of spin polarized currents and using semiconductors as spin valves.

Amplification is the basic desired output of a transistor based on semiconductor but existing metal based devices do not amplify signals but semiconductors based spintronics devices could provide amplification and be multifunctional. Another three-layered device, the magnetic tunnel junction, has a thin insulating layer between two metallic ferromagnets. Current flows through the device by the process of quantum tunneling: a small number of electrons manage to jump through the barrier even though they are forbidden to be in the insulator. The tunneling current is obstructed when the two ferromagnetic layers have opposite orientations and is allowed when their orientations are the same. These magnetic tunnel junctions form the basis of the MRAM chips mentioned above.

Working

The spin being attached to electrons carry information which is read at a terminal. Spin orientation of electron survives for relatively long time which makes spintronics devices attractive for memory storage and quantum computing (electron spin represent QUBIT of information).GMR technology uses sandwiched nonmagnetic material such as silver between two thin layer of magnetic material such as cobalt .When a current passes through layers consisting of spin up or spin down electrons, only those electrons pass which have same spin as that of layer while rest are scattered. The orientation of one of the layers can be changed by magnetic field hence letting more electrons when two layers are synchronized and vice-versa .Thus electrical resistance can be altered easily. Suppose you have to write 1011,then make the orientation spin up for T time (say) ,then spin down for another T time and finally spin up for 2T time and that’s how information gets transferred. A ferromagnet can even affect the flow of a current in a nearby nonmagnetic metal. For example, present-day read heads in computer hard drives use a device dubbed a spin valve, wherein a layer of a nonmagnetic metal is sandwiched between two ferromagnetic metallic layers. The magnetization of the first layer is fixed, or pinned, but the second ferromagnetic layer is not. As the read head travels along a track of data on a computer disk, the small magnetic fields of the recorded 1's and 0's change the second layer's magnetization back and forth, parallel or antiparallel to the magnetization of the pinned layer. In the parallel case, only electrons that are oriented in the favored direction flow through the conductor easily. In the antiparallel case, all electrons are impeded. The resulting changes in the current allow GMR read heads to detect weaker fields than their predecessors; so that data can be stored using more tightly packed magnetized spots on a disk, increasing storage densities by a factor of three.

Spinning to the future

In 1990 Supriyo Datta and Biswajit A. Das, then at Purdue University, proposed a design for a spin-polarized field-effect transistor, or spin FET. In a conventional FET, a narrow semiconductor channel runs between two electrodes named the source and the drain. When voltage is applied to the gate electrode, which is above the channel, the resulting electric field drives electrons out of the channel (for instance), turning the channel into an insulator. The Datta-Das spin FET has a ferromagnetic source and drain so that the current flowing into the channel is spin-polarized. When a voltage is applied to the gate, the spins rotate as they pass through the channel and the drain rejects these antialigned electrons.

A spin FET would have several advantages over a conventional FET. Flipping an electron's spin takes much less energy and can be done much faster than pushing an electron out of the channel. One can also imagine changing the orientation of the source or drain with a magnetic field, introducing an additional type of control that is not possible with a conventional FET: logic gates whose functions can be changed on the fly.

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology have made the first confirmed “spintronic” device incorporating organic molecules, a potentially superior approach for innovative electronics that rely on the spin, and associated magnetic orientation, of electrons. The physicists created a nanoscale test structure to obtain clear evidence of the presence and action of specific molecules and magnetic switching behavior. The experiments, described in the October 9 issue of Applied Physics Letters, used a specially designed nanoscale “pore” in a silicon wafer. A one-molecule-thick layer of self-assembled molecules containing carbon, hydrogen and sulfur was sandwiched in the pore, between nickel and cobalt electrodes. The researchers applied an electric current to the device and measured the voltage levels produced as electrons “tunneled” through the molecules from the cobalt to the nickel electrodes. (Tunneling, observed only at nanometer and atomic dimensions, occurs when electrons exhibit wave-like properties, which permit them to penetrate barriers.)

Spintronics ahead of electronics

A basic fact is that a magnet sustains its magnetism even when magnetic field is switched off, while electron motion stops after electric field seizes to operate, thus first of all replacing RAM with MRAM so that the data won’t be lost even after the power is switched off and even reducing the boot time for convenience and speed.

Limitations

Because in spintronics, electron spin carries the information, it is important to know how far electrons can travel in a device before this spin information is lost. n a discovery that could contribute to the emerging field of spintronics, scientists have demonstrated a way to measure the distance an electron travels in nanoscale materials before its spin is reversed due to scattering.

Researchers must answer several major questions before the second category of devices can take off as a viable industry such as:-

Can we devise economic ways to combine ferromagnetic metals and semiconductors in integrated circuits? Can we make semiconductors that are ferromagnetic at room temperature? What is an efficient way to inject spin-polarized currents, or spin currents, into a semiconductor? What happens to spin currents at boundaries between different semiconductors? How long can a spin current retain its polarization in a semiconductor?

So the field is wide open for research and will surely give us the opportunity to use computer as small as a quantum computer.

Abhinav Bindra wins India's first ever individual gold at the Olympic Games

I know this is a technical blog and this post is no where related with this blog, but before a blogger, I'm a Indian and I feel proud sharing this breaking part of news with you all.

World champion Abhinav Bindra wins India's first ever individual gold at the Olympic Games by winning the gold medal at the men's 10m air rifle event in Beijing on Monday.

The 25-year-old, who qualified fourth for the event, shot an overall score of (596+140.5) 700.5 in a thrilling finale which went right down to the last shot.

The silver in the event went to Chinese Zhu Qinan (699.7) while Finland's Henri Hakkinen (699.4) had to be content with a bronze.

"He is the best shooter in the world and I think his is a morale boosting feat for everyone in the contingent," a jubilant Indian Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi said after Bindra's win.

"We are all very happy. He is a very hardworking athlete. The entire shooting contingent is celebrating. We are very proud of him and it is just the beginning," national coach Sunny Thomas said.

"Abhinav is a very calm and composed guy and doesn't get very excited," Thomas added.

Bindra, a Khel Ratna awardee, had earlier won the gold medal in 2002 Commonwealth Games in the pairs event and silver in the individual event.

Earlier, Gagan Narang had failed to qualify for the finals of the same event after falling short in the count-back.

Imaginative Nokia 6639 Cellphone + DSLR: Pentium M, Swiss Army Knife, Shaver, Zippo Lighter

Someone has taken it upon himself to spend some serious time in PhotoShop designing the answer to all devices. The superphone picture popped up on Chinese site bbs.imobile.com.cn and apparently this Nokia 6639 boasts an incredible 1024 x 768 display and an absolutely ginormous interchangeable camera lens, complete with support for both Leica and Nikon. The megapixel count has not been discussed, but I have no idea how the lens could stay attached when you slide open the zippo lighter.

Other dreamed-up specs include integrated WiFi connectivity, a connection for an external flash, and the magical lighter. It also appears to sport a full Swiss Army knife-esque supply of clippers, saws, and other tools. Yup, definitely PhotoShop, but it looks so cool we had to share it with ya... a gadget geek can dream can't he?

This Nokia concept will supposedly feature a 2.0-GHz Intel Pentium M processor, 512MB of DDR2 memory, 1024 x 768 display, Wi-Fi, and a 2.0-megapixel camera w/removable SLR lenses. No word yet on if this device will go into production. One more picture after the jump.

The Nokia 6639 is sure to be a desktop replacement, its 16 million color TFT color screen parameters will surely amaze you, also don’t forget its camera the exposure mode can be automatic, procedural exposure aperture priority, shutter priority, manual and users set up. Lastly the most remarkable features of this phone is the Swiss yataghan Plug procedures remote car control (with the public wireless transmission protocol), sparking Zippo; the LED beam, severe chemical devices, thermometer, filter and needle guide function for wild camping. The exclusive beer and champagne opening, J device adapter, the adapter can be connected to a dedicated electric razor (needed to support Brown shaving)

MyFaveTeacher.com : Rate ur teachers

Now there is an Indian version of ratemyprofessors/ratemyteachers for the Indian college students where students can give marks to their college teachers on various criterion. The web site is called http://www.MyFaveTeacher.com/ The Invitation code for JIIT students to register on to the site is ap3hg2d98gkrm1

There are 3 criterion on which the students can give marks to their teachers. Subject Clarity is to judge whether the teacher teaches his/her subject clearly or not. Helpfulness judges whether the teacher is sufficiently helpful to the students regarding the subject and in general. Easiness is another criterion to give marks to the teacher. The teacher's strictness is regarded by MyFaveTeacher as yet another drawback which hampers the education system of India. So the less strict the teacher, the more marks to him/her.

Around 350 colleges from 20 metro cities of India have been listed on to the website. The website has a limited number of reviews and ratings for Indian teachers by their students owing to the "Invite Only" approach that MyFaveTeacher.com has acquired. Only those registered with the website have the privilege to invite other students to give marks to teachers. The website was launched quite recently around June 2008.

There have been a number of opinions condemning the education system of India and the teaching methodologies that are applied in Indian schools and colleges. This site claims to make a difference, even though only a slight one, by raising the students' voice in lieu of the education being imparted to them through their teachers. The much debated teaching system which focuses primarily on cramming rather than conceptual training in colleges is further released to question with the launch of MyFaveTeacher.

The western world has seen many teachers and professors condemning the sites which seek to let students give "marks" to their instructors and the even conformist country India is yet to give its comments on the "give marks to your teachers website" MyFaveTeacher.com

How to find if someone is invisible on Gtalk / Gmail chat

I discovered a bug in Google Talk’s invisible status feature available in its Gmail Chat version and Gtalk Lab Edition version. If use smartly, you can figure out if some is avoiding you or really offline.

Here are steps:

  1. Set the chat as off the record with target user (how?). This can be done only when the other user is online. (need help?)
  2. Now try sending chat to that user when he is invisible or offline.
  3. If he is invisible, then he will receive chat.
  4. But if he Is offline, then you will receive error did not receive your chat”.

Explanation:

Point 1: When a chat is set off the record, it will no longer get stored in your Gmail account.

Point 2: When you send a chat message to offline or invisible user, it gets delivered by default. At receiving end if user is online, a chat screen pops up showing him your message. If he is offline, your chat message will go to inbox as a mail.

Now if you put together above points then you will notice that, when you set chat off the record it can’t be delivered to inbox as mail, so it will be delivered only if user is online (no matter if he is invisible).

Now the only tricky part is finding a user online for once to set chat off the records. This doesn’t seem hard as invisible status is still limited to Gmail version of Google Talk and you may be in luck if your friend uses Google Talk desktop clients/gadgets or third party IM client to chat.

Secretly Hide Any File Inside JPG Image File

Few months ago , USA Today story claimed that al-Qaeda operatives were sending out encrypted messages by hiding them inside digital photographs [jpg files] on eBay.

While the claim was never proved, it is very easy to hide [or embed] any other file[s] inside a JPEG image. You can place video clips, pdf, mp3, Office documents, zipped files, webpage or any other file format inside a JPEG image.

And when a suspecting user [read CIA, FBI] tries to open that jpeg file [with concealed information] in either a photo editing software or as a thumbnail inside Windows Explorer, it would be tough to make out if this camouflaged jpg file is different from any standard jpg image.

Let's say you want to hide a confidential PDF document from the tax investigation officers. What you can do is convert that file into a regular jpg image so even if anyone double-clicks this file, all he will see is a preview of the image and nothing else. And when you want to work on the actual PDF, just rename the extension from jpg to pdf.

Here's the full trick:

Step 1: You will need two files - the file you want to hide and one jpg image - it can be of any size or dimensions. [If you want to hide multiple files in one jpeg image, just zip them into one file]

Step 2: Copy the above two files to the C: folder and open the command prompt window.

Step 3: Move to the c: root by typing cd \ [if the files are in another folder, you'll have to change the prompt to that folder]

Step 4: The most important step - type the following command:

copy /b myimage.jpg + filetohide.pdf my_new_image.jpg

To recover the original PDF file, just rename my_new_image.jpg to filename.pdf.

Here we illustrated with an pdf file as that works with simple renaming. If you want to apply this technique to other file formats like XLS, DOC, PPT, AVI, WMV, WAV, SWF, etc, you may have to first compress them in RAR format before executing the copy /b DOS command.

To restore the original file, rename the .jpg file to .rar and extract it using 7-zip or Winrar.
