Nokia Secret Codes / Hacks

These codes for the Nokia series of phones provide some interesting information for users, they also unlock some hidden functions. These codes are often reffered to as "Nokia Secret Codes" or "Nokia Hacks". Use the codes at your own risk, not all Nokia phones support all codes, I have tried to split them into these groups.

These 3 codes work on 90% of Nokia phones:

*#06#n/aDisplay the IMEI (Standard GSM command, works on all phones)
*#0000#n/aDisplay the firmware version and date
*#92702689#*#war0anty#Here you can view the S/N and the IMEI as well as the life timer (newer models). The date the phone left the factory and the date it was purchased. If your phone has been repaired the date of the repair is also visible. You will need to turn the phone off to exit this menu. Newer phones simply require you to press ok.

The following codes are specific to older series 40 phones; (Entering the following codes will restart the phone)

*4720#(*hra0#)Cctivates Half Rate, Half Rate is 5.6kbit/s and uses half the bandwidth at the cost of call quality. Network operators often activate half rate on overloaded towers during peak times to save costs.
#4720#(#hra0#)Deactivates Half Rate
*3370#(*efr0#)Activates Enhanced Full Rate, EFT attempts to match wire quality. The calls are 12.2kbit/s and are not supported by all operators. It is compatibale with the hightest AMR mode.
#3370#(#efr0#)Deactivates Enhanced Full Rate
*#746085685#(*#sim0clock#)Display the SIM clock status

The following codes are phone specific or phase related;

*#7220#(*#pca0#)Activate the GPRS PCCCH support (Packet Common Control Channel)
*#7230#(*#pcd0#)Deactivate the GPRS PCCCH support
*#7760# (*#ssn0#)Display the manufacturing serial number

This only works on the 3310 and 3330;

*#67705646#(*#opr0logo#)Clear the operator logo, the logo will be reset to the default network operator logo.

The following codes work on newer series 40 & series 60/80 phones;

*#2820#(*#bta0#)Display the Bluetooth MAC address (Phone must have a built in bluetooth adapter)
*#7370925538#(*#res0wallet#)Reset the mobile wallet (Phone must have the mobile wallet feature)
*#7370#(*#res0#)Soft-format the memory (Symbian)
*#7780#(*#rst0#)Reset to factory defaults, confirmation required (also known has a Hard-format), all phone contents will be wiped clean including contacts and smses if they are stored on the phone

Google decides to KILL "Lively" at New Year Eve

Google announced that on December 31st they will shut down Lively, which was their 3D chat world, and somewhat of a potential competitor to Second Life. Room widgets embedded in other sites are then supposed to show an image but no more interaction, which would add Lively to the list of Google’s canceled products. Google’s post on this decision does not really give a detailed reasoning for this shut-down of a product which was just released this year, except that they’re saying “we want to ensure that we prioritize our resources and focus more on our core search, ads and apps business.” In particular, this leaves some questions unanswered as a company could theoretically embed ads in this 3D world app.

Google said on its blog that after four and a half months on the Lively project, its resources would be better spent focusing on its core search, advertising and applications businesses.

"We've also always accepted that when you take these kinds of risks not every bet is going to pay off," the posting added. Google was not immediately available for comment. Google employees working on the project will move to other teams, according to the blog.

Many people believed that Lively could have been the first step in a plan by Google to get more into actual PC gaming but as Google's blog site states, "...we've also always accepted that when you take these kinds of risks not every bet is going to pay off. " As it turned out not many folks showed up to participate in Lively which may mean that Google's low key approach didn't get the attention it first expected

Lively users have been asked by Google to capture their work by taking videos and screenshots of their rooms. Rooms and avatars on the site will not be available after Dec. 31.

Intel Core i7 Launched : Lighting Fast !!!

With faster, intelligent, multi-core technology that applies processing power where it's needed most, new Intel® Core™ i7 processors deliver an incredible breakthrough in PC performance. They are the best desktop processors on the planet.¹

You'll multitask applications faster and unleash incredible digital media creation. And you'll experience maximum performance for everything you do, thanks to the combination of Intel® Turbo Boost technology² and Intel® Hyper-Threading technology (Intel® HT technology)³, which maximizes performance to match your workload.

Product information
  • 2.93 GHz and 2.66 GHz core speed
  • 8 processing threads with Intel® HT technology
  • 8 MB of Intel® Smart Cache
  • 3 Channels of DDR3 1066 MHz memory

Intel Core i7 processors deliver an incredible breakthrough in quad-core performance and feature the latest innovations in processor technologies:

Intel® Turbo Boost technology maximizes speed for demanding applications, dynamically accelerating performance to match your workload—more performance when you need it the most.²

Intel® Hyper-Threading technology enables highly threaded applications to get more work done in parallel. With 8 threads available to the operating system, multi-tasking becomes even easier.³

Intel® Smart Cache provides a higher-performance, more efficient cache subsystem. Optimized for industry leading multi-threaded games.

Intel® QuickPath Interconnect is designed for increased bandwidth and low latency. It can achieve data transfer speeds as high as 25.6 GB/sec with the Extreme Edition processor.

Integrated memory controller enables three channels of DDR3 1066 MHz memory, resulting in up to 25.6 GB/sec memory bandwidth. This memory controller's lower latency and higher memory bandwidth delivers amazing performance for data-intensive applications.

Intel® HD Boost significantly improves a broad range of multimedia and compute-intensive applications. The 128-bit SSE instructions are issued at a throughput rate of one per clock cycle, allowing a new level of processing efficiency with SSE4 optimized applications.

It appears that in order to pre-empt AMD's first "Shanghai" Opteron processors in 45 nanometre technology that was released last week, Intel already permitted reviews of the three Core i7 965 Extreme Edition, Core i7 940 and Core i7 920 processors as well as the X58 chip set after the 3rd of November. However, it was only today that the first representatives of the new "Nehalem" generation of processors developed under the code name Bloomfield really got started. Intel has now published several megabytes of data sheets, specification updates (error lists) and developers' guidelines on its web site. The documents not only describe the processors themselves, but also the chip set and the dedicated mainboard with LGA1366 socket called DX58SO.

The i7 is basically a quad core processor. Its different from the earlier versions of quad core processors from Intel. Earlier there used to be two dual core processors slapped together in a package to give a quad core processor, but in i7 all the four cores are packed on the same slab of silicon - which means faster and smooth performance.

Currently, i7 can only be used with motherboards based on the Intel X58 chipset.

The i7 chip will be available in three versions -
  1. Core i7 920 clocked at 2.66 GHz priced at $284
  2. Core i7 940 clocked at 2.66 GHz priced at $562
  3. Core i7 965 XE (Extreme Edition) clocked at 3.2 GHz priced at $999

Gmail Rolls Out Cool Official Skins / Themes

Just few mins ago, I have logged into Gmail and discovered some changes on interface! I was looking for New Features link at right-top. But did not found. Then I saw a message on top that they introduced themes and colors. I browsed to the Theme tab from settings and tried themes one after another. My love for Gmail crossed all limits :)

After using Yahoo for a couple years when I was younger I discovered Gmail and have been a fan ever since. Today Gmail released integrated themes which makes me a little happy that I won’t be looking at the same bland color scheme anymore. Take a look at the options :

Gmail also did a minor facelift to Gmail's default look to make it crisper and cleaner -- you might notice a few colors and pixels shifted around here and there.

On the Official Gmail Blog it has been stated, ”To customize your inbox, go to the Themes tab under Settings. We’ll be rolling out themes to everyone over the next couple of days, so if you don’t see them yet, check back soon. As for which theme to choose, don’t ask us. We’re neutral ;)“.

Easily Use Notepad to Open a File

Enabling this setting will allow you to use Notepad to open a file by simply right clicking on the icon. Also the Notepad will be used to open the files by default if no association already exists.

1. Go to the key "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell", if it doesn't exist create it.

2. Under shell create a new key called open, and edit the string "(Default)" to read "Open With Notepad".

3. Under open create a new key called command, and edit the string "(Default)" to read "notepad.exe %1".

Now when you right click on a file you should see "Open with Notepad" as one of the options.

Top 10 Project Killers

1. Excessive Promises - Often made without developer input or consultation. Promises of insane levels of functionality will only seek to burden the project with unnecessary tasks. Example:

  • Sales: You want a Titanium Rocket Car with your project???
  • Customer: Errm...well no...erm...
  • Sales: You can have it!!!

...later...

  • Sales: We need a Titanium Rocket Car!!
  • Programmer: WTF?!?!

2. Change - Or should I say: Refusing to accept that change is inevitable and having fixed requirements with no flexibility is unnatural.

3. Lack of Communication - Lack of client involvement and poor communication is working blind. Ever hear of Chinese whispers?

4. Inexperience - from the team leaders, programmers and management. In fact anywhere in the line can cause problems.

5. Lack of Planning - Often a curse of developers who just want to get on with the job. Planning is by far the most important aspect of a new project and also the most often neglected.

6. Lack of Priority - Concentrating too much on 'parts' and losing site of the bigger picture.

7. Relying on a Due-Date - See Parkinsons Law (work will expand to fill the time allowed).

8. Hardware and poor hardware management.

9. Ignorant Managerial Interference - I did have a great Dilbert comic for this but I lost it.

10. Insufficient Resources - Whether that be staff, time, facilities or raw materials.

Can anyone think of more? :)

Don't develop in your day job and you will be a better developer

Nice story to ponder upon.. pressure kills productivity.. and this concept can be applied to any field. You do what you want to do best when you are not pressurized / bound to do it for money (or marks!!) :)

This article is written by Nemanja Konem, a lead architect at a business firm.

"Sounds crazy right? Keep on reading, maybe it won't be by the end of the story…

For the last 8 years I was a hardcore Java developer. I worked on many different projects, various kinds and various positions - from junior to senior, team leader, project manager, lead developer and architect. But all in all, every working day of my life contained an average 80% of pure coding.

Then I decided that it's time for a career change. I quit my job, moved away from software development companies and became a solution architect in an insurance company.

Why? Mostly because anyone can be a Java developer these days. You don't need a Master degree to be a code monkey. Just read the JDK tutorial, keep up to date by following InfoQ/DZone posts and start producing. I figured out that I was missing real business know-how and that I am not a subject area expert in any business-related field.

Being an architect in a non-software company has benefits. You work for internal clients and don't bring money into the company. You just spend it.

Another benefit is that you don't code for a living anymore! It took me a while to realize why that is actually a benefit. Well, I am a developer by nature and I missed it naturally. When you are developing something all day at work, you don't have much nerves/energy/enthusiasm to do the same at home in the evening. No matter what software company you work for (Google, IBM, Oracle etc.) you will always do what your boss tells you to do and how your architect tells you to do it. It will never be exactly the way you want it.

When you are not programming during the day (and we all know that architects just throw documents over the wall for somebody else to develop it) then you have a high wish to program something at home. But this time it's different. There is no time pressure. No clients. You develop your way, what you want and how you want it. That exciting feeling I had a long time ago, came again. It didn't burn out, but was just pushed down under every-day-heavy-weight-high-pressure-development work. I did things that I always wanted to do. Read "Design Patterns", "Effective Java", "Beyond Software Architectures", "Java Puzzlers", "Java Concurrency in Practice" etc. and started implementing some ideas I had pending a long time ago, but never had time/energy to work on them. Now I have enough time and energy to think about every implemented class, to test it properly, to document it, to play around with different performance tuning options etc. I want to be proud of every line of code I make. Life is too short to waste it on something that you don't like or despise or are ashamed of later.

Suddenly I figured out that I did many things wrong just because of time pressure. I knew they were wrong, but had to take short cuts to meet tight deadlines. And that sucks! That is what is killing your will to continue coding and what makes you a terrible developer.

Some of you probably work on nice projects and completely disagree with my previous statements. Fair enough. I envy you guys. There are others that probably feel the same way I did before.

My advice to this latter group is: "find a job that brings you a financial stability but doesn't kill your desire to develop your stuff in your free time. That job can still be with some software company, but don't be afraid to let it go in case it's not. The world is a huge place with lots of opportunities. Go for it…"

Google Launches Video and Voice Chat for Gmail

Google is rolling out video and voice capabilities for the chat function that is embedded in the Gmail interface. It's a bare-bones voice and video-conferencing service, but it's simple to install and use and is a very good addition to Gmail.

It's no Skype, though. Gmail Video and Voice, as it's called, can't connect to the plain phone network, as Skype's paid service can. And there are plenty of other optional features missing, like a voice call recorder.

Gmail Video and Voice will be made available to all Gmail users starting Tuesday at noon PST. Global rollout should be complete by the end of the day. To see if you have it, open a chat with someone (you don't actually have to message them). If your account is video-enabled, at the lower left of the chat window, there will be an interface element labeled "Video & more." When you click on that it will walk you through installing the plug-in. If you want to make a video call to someone who hasn't yet installed the plug-in, you'll be able to invite them to do so. (In my early test of the service, this feature wasn't yet enabled).

The new chat functionality will work on PCs with Windows XP or Vista, as well as on Macs with OS X 10.4 or later. The plugin will work with all the major browsers, including Google's own Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari.

From what we have seen so far, the videos integrate directly with the standard chat function in Google. To get started, you have to first enable this new functionality from the 'Options' menu at the bottom of a Gmail chat window. After that, all you have to do is select the contact you want to speak with and click on 'Video & more' in the lower-left part of the chat window. From there, you can then start a voice or video chat.

Once you install the plugin, to start a video chat, just click on the "Video & more" menu at the bottom of your Gmail chat window, and choose "Start video chat." You'll have a few seconds to make sure you look presentable while it's ringing, and then you'll see and hear your friend live, right from within Gmail. You can click the "pop-out" iconto make the video larger, or click the fullscreen iconin the upper left-hand corner for a fully immersive experience. See this all in action in the video below:

The existing downloadable Google Talk application, which has supported voice chat for a while, only later may get the video capability. The Google people I spoke with were noncommittal.

Upshot: The addition of voice and video makes Gmail a more compelling product. It's very nice to have all the major communications channels (e-mail, chat, voice, video, and soon, SMS) in one place and under one log-on. Google could, though, layer in some more connectivity into its own apps (like YouTube, Google Docs presentations, and Android) to make it even richer. And the lack of an interface to the standard phone system is limiting.

But Google got the first release of its videophone pretty much right. It works, it's easy, and if you're a Gmail user, the service is right where you want it.

Here's a Google developer's pitch for the service:

Skype?

Interestingly, Google Talk, Google's desktop chat program does not have any video functionality yet, though Google enabled voice chat for Google Talk a long time ago. By adding voice and video chat, Google is clearly going up against Skype, which has made video chat one of its main features in the latest version of its software.

Google.org : Searching for solutions !

Google.org aspires to use the power of information and technology to address the global challenges of our age: climate change, poverty and emerging disease. In collaboration with experienced partners working in each of these fields, we will invest our resources and tap the strengths of Google’s employees and global operations to advance five major initiatives: Develop Renewable Energy Cheaper Than Coal (RE), RechargeIT, Predict and Prevent, Inform and Empower to Improve Public Services, and Fuel the Growth of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises.

In 2004, when Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin wrote to prospective shareholders about their vision for the company, they outlined a commitment to contribute significant resources, including 1% of Google's equity and profits in some form, as well as employee time, to address some of the world's most urgent problems. That commitment became Google.org.

Google.org is a hybrid philanthropy that uses a range of approaches to help advance solutions within our five initiatives. We operate in a traditional manner by supporting our partners’ work with targeted grants. But we can also invest in for-profit endeavors, such as efforts by companies to develop breakthrough renewable energy technologies. Our structure also allows us to lobby for policies that support our philanthropic goals. Additionally, we can tap Google’s innovative technology and, most importantly, its inspired workforce. We’ve already begun to donate and invest Google.org’s funds, and we expect to continue to do so in the future.

Google also established the Google Foundation in 2005, which is a separate 501(c)(3) private foundation. Sun and Microsoft UNITE to compete with Google

Starting today, when Java users around the world are prompted to download an update, the Windows Live toolbar will be offered as a tag - along, according to Microsoft representatives.

It's part of Microsoft's continuing effort to raise awareness about its competitor to Google's market-dominating search site. Not only will the toolbar give access to Live Search, but also to MSN content like news, and to Live services such as Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger.

"This agreement with Sun Microsystems is another important milestone in our strategy to secure broad-scale distribution for our search offering, enabling millions more people to experience the benefits of Live Search," said Yusuf Mehdi, senior vice president of the Online
Audience Business at Microsoft, in a statement. "With the vast array of Java software-based Web applications that are downloaded every month, this deal will expose Live Search to millions more Internet users and drive increased volume for our search advertisers."

The move reflects fiscal weakness on Sun's part; the company posted a $1.7 billion loss in its most recent quarter. The alliance is especially surprising, as Sun's Java platform has traditionally
competed with Microsoft technologies such as ActiveX and, more recently, Silverlight.

Sun claims that the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is installed on 91 percent of Internet-connected PCs—or over 800 million units, and that 6.5 million developers around the globe use its programming language.

Microsoft seems to be too desperate or too worried and so is SUN, Great going Google !!!

P2P Cloud Computing is here ( atleast for storage )

Wuala puts a new twist on cloud storage. While typical cloud storage services move your data onto servers managed by the provider, Wuala also uses disk space on other members' computers. Files are encrypted on the user's own machine and the chopped up into little pieces and uploaded to Wuala's servers, as well as numerous other users' computers (Wuala calls this 'social grid storage') to provide a redundant storage solution. Wuala's local client is written in Java and runs on OSX, Windows, and Linux.

Share It

While Wuala will happily sell you additional storage space (from $25 a year for 10GB to $1000 for 1TB), you can also trade your own local disk space for cloud storage space. If you share 5GB of space on your local drive, you will get an additional 5GB of online storage. Given how cheap hard disks have become, this seems like a fair trade-off. Users who share their local hard disk space can also turn off advertising on Wuala.

Wuala's client basically looks like a local folder and you can decide if you want to share any of your files stored on Wuala with either your friends or a group of users.

Encryption: The Good and the Bad

Even with the strong encryption Wuala uses, though, the fact that some information is going to be stored on machines outside of even Wuala's control is not going to sit well with a lot of people. While most private users can probably live with these risks (which are inherent in any cloud storage solution), businesses will probably stay very far away from Wuala.

There is also the question of how people will use Wuala - after all, the service provides almost unlimited and strongly encrypted storage. As Wuala has little control over what is shared on the network, Wuala might turn out to be a haven for rather unsavory activities. But then, the same can probably be said for most other cloud storage services as well.

Where's the Money?

Wuala expects to monetize its service through advertising and in the German and Swiss market, where Wuala is based, they have also partnered with a photo printing service that will allow Wuala users to order prints of shared photos right from within Wuala. Besides this, Wuala is also selling storage space beyond the 1GB that every user who doesn't share disk space gets by default.

The cloud storage market is highly competitive, but so far, no clear front-runner has emerged. Wuala's competitors include Box.net, Dropbox, Mozy, as well as Apple's Mobile Me and Microsoft's various online storage services, including SkyDrive and Mesh. There are also various software solutions to make backing up to Amazon's S3 more consumer friendly. All of these have different business models and feature sets, but Wuala's simplicity and P2P sharing approach will make it very competitive.

Download complete websites to your desktop and surf them offline

Website eXtractor saves you time and effort by downloading entire Internet sites (or the sections you stipulate) to your hard drive.

Whether you browse the web for research, work, or fun, there's nothing worse than having to wait for page after page to load in Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator (or in other popular browsers). The problem is they will only load one page at a time. So if you are viewing a large website with a thousand pages, you'd have to click the mouse a thousand times ... and ... choose a directory/folder a thousands times when you want to save each file. You end up spending a lot of time waiting around and not enough time reading or viewing pages on the Internet.

Note: Using a regular browser to surf large websites or photo galleries takes the fun out of web browsing and makes research a real chore.

But now, with WebSite eXtractor, you can download whole websites (or parts of them) in one go to your computer. You can then view the whole site offline at your leisure - and you can whiz through the saved pages at lightning speed.

WebSite eXtractor is a great tool for researchers, journalists, students, equity analysts, business and marketing executives - as well as for those who want to browse family websites containing digital photo albums.

Advantages :

  • Transfer whole websites to CD-ROM or floppy
  • Another big benefit of the program is it changes html-links to relative names. In other words, it turns web addresses (URLs) into addresses that work on your computer.
  • Researchers, writers, and journalists can easily archive reference material from the Internet.
  • The program can download up to 100 files at a time, which saves you a huge amount of time compared to ordinary browsers.
  • Website eXtractor automatically lets you download any files that were not copied due to transfer errors or bad connections.

To download the full version use the given torrent : http://torrents.thepiratebay.org/3655896/Website_eXtractor_9.52_Retail.3655896.TPB.torrent

Computer that reacts to thoughts : a lifeline for brain injured

University of Portsmouth researcher Paul Gnanayutham has developed a computer system capable of understanding thought. Gnanayutham's system uses patients' brain waves and eye and muscular movements, called bio-potentials, to move a cursor on a computer. The cursor can point to targets on the computer screen, including "yes," "no," "thank you," a switch to turn on electrical appliances such as a television, and a link to the patient's favorite Web site. The switches can be changed to anything a person prefers to say, watch, or control. Gnanayutham says the prototype device, which is designed for people who have suffered traumatic brain injuries, is ready for use on real people. "This technology has been around but very few people have used it for anything worthwhile," he says. The system is non-invasive and works by attaching probes on an alice band worn around the head. The band picks up brain waves and muscle and eye movement signals at the forehead. The signals are fed into an amplifier, which can cut out external noise and listen to only the bio-potentials of the person wearing the electrodes, and then are sent to the serial port, where the computer interprets the signals to control the cursor. As long as a person can move their eyes left and right, they can move the cursor left and right, and raising and lowering their eyebrows moves the cursor up and down. Over time, users can be taught to imagine their brainwaves being read by the computer, leading to them learning to navigate the cursor through the power of thought.

How was " Windows 7 " named ?

Mike Nash, vice president of Windows product management, has revealed the following details about the naming of the next Windows OS (Windows 7) to hit the market in order to pacify the raging debate over the counting methodology used by Microsoft to reach the number "7":

"The very first release of Windows was Windows 1.0, the second was Windows 2.0, the third Windows 3.0," he said. "[But] here's where things get a little more complicated."

To reach the magic number, Microsoft tallied all Windows 9x versions -- Windows 95, 98, 98 SE and Millennium -- as Windows 4.0. By that reckoning, Windows 2000 is 5.0 and Vista is 6.0.

Windows XP -- still the most-used version of Windows by a wide margin -- was relegated to the minor 5.1 by Microsoft. "[When] we shipped Windows XP as 5.1, even though it was a major release, we didn't want to change code version numbers to maximize application compatibility," Nash explained.

To confuse matters further, Nash noted that even though the next Windows will carry the "7" moniker and is considered the seventh version of the operating system, its code will actually be marked as Windows 6.1. "We decided to ship the Windows 7 code as Windows 6.1, which is what you will see in the actual version of the product [when you run] cmd.exe," Nash said.

QUITE confusing, eh?

Microsoft launches Windows Azure

LOS ANGELES--Microsoft on Monday announced a version of Windows that runs over the Internet from inside Microsoft's own data centers.

Dubbed Windows Azure, it's less a replacement for the operating system that runs on one's own PC than it is an alternative for developers, intended to let them write programs that live inside Microsoft's data centers as opposed to on the servers of a given business.

Windows® Azure is a cloud services operating system that serves as the development, service hosting and service management environment for the Azure Services Platform. Windows Azure provides developers with on-demand compute and storage to host, scale, and manage Web applications on the Internet through Microsoft® data centers.

To build these applications and services, developers can use their existing Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2008 expertise. In addition, Windows Azure supports popular standards and protocols including SOAP, REST, and XML. Windows Azure is an open platform that will support both Microsoft and non-Microsoft languages and environments.

According to the company the Azure Services Platform is an internet-scale cloud services platform hosted in Microsoft data centers, which provides an operating system and a set of developer services that can be used individually or together.

Being flexible and interoperable platform, developers can use this platform to build new applications to run from the cloud or enhance existing applications with cloud-based capabilities. Its open architecture gives developers the choice to build web applications, applications running on connected devices, PCs, servers, or hybrid solutions offering the best of online and on-premises.

However this calls for having robust remote delivery capabilities. Given this Microsoft has created robust data centers for the online delivery of solutions.

The company has opened state of the art data centers and ramping up aggressively both in US and UK. Azure is touted as a platform that will reduce the need for up-front technology purchases, and it enables developers to quickly and easily creates applications running in the cloud by using their existing skills with the Microsoft Visual Studio development environment and the Microsoft. NET Framework.

In addition to manage code languages supported by .NET, Azure will support more programming languages and development environments in the near future. Azure simplifies maintaining and operating applications by providing on-demand compute and storage to host, scale, and manage web and connected applications.

Microsoft and Google now share more than colors

We all know only too well the Windows logo, that ubiquitous four-color flapping flag, which conveniently marks the Start Menu. In case you have not seen the trees because of the forest so far, the colors in question are red, green, blue and yellow. Coincidently, the same colors have been planted in Google's logo - the search engine - as well. However, there would be nothing too strange about this, if the similarity were restricted to the chromatic aspect alone.

But when it comes to Google's web browser, the resemblance between its logo and that from Windows tends to become more obvious, in that the former’s approach seems like a stylized clone of the latter’s logo. Since just taking a closer look at the two, side by side, will do the trick. It could be just us, but the only difference in there is the fact that Windows' fluttering flag has been rolled into a Google ball.

Cool APT Repositories for Ubuntu and Debian

One of the great things about Debian and Ubuntu is that you have a ton of great open source software at your fingertips via the package repositories for those distros. However, if you want to run popular packages like VMware Server or Opera, it gets a little tricker.

This is only for folks who use Debian or Debian-based distros, especially Ubuntu and its derivatives. Also, you should already know how to use Advanced Package Tool (APT) and how to edit a sources.list file. Aren't sure? Brush up at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Packaging_Tool.

The sources.list that comes with your distro is probably fine for most people, but if you're more adventurous, or if you want to make it easy to install and manage third-party software packages, you need to add other repositories to your sources.list. Let's take a look at some of the more interesting choices out there. However, all the usual caveats about conflicts apply here, so make sure you know what you're doing before you start adding repos willy-nilly.

Opera

Firefox is an awesome Web browser, but Opera is pretty amazing in its own right, even if it's not open source. If you'd like to check out the other cool non- Internet Explorer alternative, add one of the following to sources.list, depending upon your tolerance for beta software (the commented line is always helpful later, so it's a good idea to add it):

# Opera
deb http://deb.opera.com/opera/ sid non-free
deb http://deb.opera.com/opera-beta/ sid non-free

Before you update your package cache, however, you need to run a few commands, which add the public key for the repo to your system's keychain. If you forget this step, APT will complain every single time you run it, which will quickly drive you nutso.

$ sudo gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv-key 6A423791
$ sudo gpg --fingerprint 6A423791
$ sudo gpg --armor --export 6A423791| sudo apt-key add -

Run sudo apt-get update and you can now install Opera. Further instructions can be found onhttp://deb.opera.com.

Skype

Skype is an excellent, though non-open, VoIP client. In particular, the fact that it auto-encrypts your voice and IM traffic is a wonderful bonus. To make it easy to grab the latest version of Skype, update your sources.list with this line:

# Skype
deb http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ stable non-free

Now this will work for you:

$ apt-get install skype

For more info, see http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/repositories.html.

WINE

WINE isn't an emulator, but it's incredibly useful when you want to run Windows- based software. In recent years this project has really accelerated, so you'd be silly not to add the following line to your sources.list:

# WINE
deb http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt feisty main

To add the project's public key, run this:

$ wget -q http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/387EE263.gpg -O- |sudo apt-key add-

To find out more, check out http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb.

Google

It's nice that a company like Google doesn't forget that its very existence depends on Linux. It's even nicer that the company makes software for Linux as well as Windows and Mac OS X. To make it easy to work with that software, put this in your sources.list:

# Google software repository
deb http://dl.google.com/linux/deb/ stable non-free

And don't forget to add those public keys!

$ wget -q -O- https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub|sudo apt-key add-apt-get update

At this time, the only two packages available in the repository are Google Desktop and Picasa, which you can install as follows:

$ sudo apt-get install picasa google-desktop-linux

Google Earth will be added" soon," which will be nice. In the meantime, you can read Google instructions for APT (and other package systems) at http://www.google.com/linuxrepositories/index.html.

Canonical commercial

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, has a special repository available that contains software that is free to acquire but not under an open license. Termed the" commercial" repo, it contains things like RealPlayer, Opera, SugarCRM, and VMWare Server. To grab this software, place these lines in sources.list:

# Canonical Commercial Repository
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu dapper-commercial main

To install VMWare Server (which is awesome, by the way), just use APT:

$ sudo apt-get install vmware-server

To find out exactly what packages are available, head over to http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/pool/main/ and drill down.

debian-multimedia

Unfortunately, the pernicious and corrupting influence of money in politics has led to stupid laws that make some software illegal- or at least legally sketchy- for Penguinistas to install and use. You can get around these ridiculous restrictions by adding this line to sources.list:

# Debian Multimedia
deb-src http://www.debian-multimedia.org sid main

Before you start installing software, take care of those keys:

$ sudo apt-get update&& sudo apt-get install debian-multimedia-keyring

Now you have a huge list of packages available to you, which you can view at http://www.debian-multimedia.org/pool/main/. Some oldies but goodies are there, like acroread (Adobe's Acrobat Reader) and w32codecs (the codecs for Windows-based formats), and plenty more.

You'll find software for playing, ripping, and authoring DVDs, multimedia players and transcoders,MythTV, and plugins to extend Firefox. Visit http://www.debian-multimedia.org and start exploring!

Ubuntu sources.list generator

Finally, if you're interested in one-stop shopping, head over to the Ubuntu source-o-matic, which asks a few questions and then generates a custom sources.list just for you. To begin, go tohttp://www.ubuntu-nl.org/source-o-matic/.

Answer a few basic questions about your location and your system. Then pick the repositories you want from a pretty extensive list.

Your choices include, besides the standard Ubuntu repos, the following software, along with my comments:

  • Seveas' Ubuntu Packages– a very nice 3rd party repository.

  • Ubuntu backports project– new releases of packages that are" backported" to the current and older Ubuntu releases.

  • Kubuntu.org bleeding edge KDE– this has the latest real release of KDE, not the latest beta.

  • Kubuntu.org bleeding edge KOffice– has KOffice, and is actually safe to use.

  • Kubuntu.org bleeding edge AmaroK– latest Amarok release, very safe to use.

  • Upstream WINE– WINE direct from the source.

  • Upstream Opera– the official Opera repository.

  • Upstream Beryl– lots of shiny whizzy Desktop goodness!

  • Medibuntu multimedia packages– multimedia software that isn't included in Ubuntu for legal reasons.

  • Canonical Commercial packages– non-free software that runs on Ubuntu.

If you do decide to get the bleeding edge KDE updates, make sure you run the following first:

$ wget http://people.ubuntu.com/~jriddell/kubuntu-packages-jriddell-key.gpg | sudo apt-key add-

If you're a KDE user, the Kubuntu repos are a great way to keep up to date with new releases of key KDE software.

Seveas' repository contains some interesting items, including FreeNX (which provides secure, remote X11 connections, and is covered in this month's" On The Desktop" column), w32codecs, ttf-fossfonts (108 GPL or Public Domain TTF fonts), and libdvdcss (needed to view" protected" DVDs). If Seveas' stuff looks good to run, run this before you use APT:

$ gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys 1135D466
$ gpg --export --armor 1135D466 | sudo apt-key add -

One cool thing about using source-o-matic is the commented help it prints at the top of the sources.list file it creates:

# If you get GPG errors with this sources.list,
# locate the GPG key in this file
# and run these commands (where KEY is replaced with that key)
#

# gpg --keyserver hkp://subkeys.pgp.net --recv-keys KEY
# gpg --export --armor KEY | sudo apt-key add -

That's an excellent cheatsheet to have available to you.

Microsoft DreamSpark Helps Ignite the Imaginations, Careers of Today’s Students

Microsoft unveiled on Wednesday its DreamSpark program that offers some of the company's development and designer tools free to students.

Microsoft DreamSpark™ makes professional-level developer and design software available to students in India at no charge, so you can chase your dreams and create the next big breakthrough in technology- or just get a head start in your career.

Dreamspark will be a boon for those students who have everything except the expensive softwares and design tools. As we all know that most of the Indian computers run on pirated softwares and these days Microsoft is taking strict actions to stop software piracy in India. So, the availability of free and licensed software to Indian students will be very encouraging.

The announcement was made in India by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi. Gates is visiting India mainly in connection with his philanthropic interests.

Microsoft launched the DreamSpark program in February in the U.S., China and some countries in Europe, with plans to introduce it in stages in a number of other countries. Microsoft said at the time that the company was providing professional-level tools hoping to "inspire students to explore the power of software and encourage them to forge the next wave of software-driven breakthroughs."

The DreamSpark tools are available online and through DVDs from Microsoft's program partners such as NIIT, Aptech and Hughes Net Fusion Centers. These partners will also provide technology training on the DreamSpark software tools at a nominal cost, Microsoft said.

Microsoft DreamSpark is available to all interested students besides those studying in technology areas, a Microsoft spokeswoman said.

Students... Let's celebrate!

Visit www.dreamspark.com for further details.
