Install & Run Microsoft Office 2007 on Linux

Wouldn’t it be lovely to have a nice, clean installation of Microsoft’s Office 2007 Suite to run on your Linux Distribution? For some people, this is the only thing that truly holds them back from an all-Linux environment… But not anymore! We have compiled a nice, concise set of instructions to help guide you along.

WineHQ is the perfect install application, and a few file deletion and reinsertion steps will have you up and running with Office 2007 on your Linux OS in no time at all.
  1. Visit the WineHQ website, this program is used to launch .exe files on your Linux operating system. In the most simple terms it allows Windows programs to run on your Linux-based systems. Click on the "Download Link" to the left side of the page. Choose your version of Linux such as Ubuntu or Red Hat. Follow the installation instructions for your version of Linux. Each version of Linux will have its own steps; the download page will guide you in the process with step by step directions.

  2. Choose the "Applications" link on your Linux desktop then under the applications section look for the option titled "Wine" and click on it. Next click on the "Configure Wine" option. When the option to pick the OS appears choose the "Windows Vista" option.

  3. Click on the "Applications" option again then choose the "Wine" option followed by the "Libraries" tab. Click on the rpcrt4.dll and msxml3.dll files and choose the "override" function so that they are set as "Windows Native Files." You will then need to download an improved version of the rpcrt4.dll file, Save that file to your desktop.

  4. From the Wine menu located at "Applications," then "Wine," choose the option to open your C drive. Navigate under the C drive to the Windows/System32 Directory that will appear as part of the Wine installation and remove the rpcrt4.dll and msxml3.dll files. Move the rpcrt4.dll file that you've saved to your desktop via the download link (see Resources below) to the System32 folder in place of the old file. Then download msxml3.dll file.

  5. Install the msxml3.dll by opening the Linux terminal window and using the "msiexec /i msxml3.msi" command or by simply moving it into the System32 file that you've opened.

  6. Insert your Microsoft Office 2007 CD and click on the "Setup.exe" file. If the file will not load, use the "Wine setup.exe" file from the CD directory for the Setup.exe file. Follow the program instructions to install Office 2007.

  7. Go to the Wine program "Directors" file from your toolbar and click on "Office 2007" to begin using the application.
