Top Cyber-Computing Tips

Computers are just like humans. They too can be vulnerable to viruses, harmful codes and threats which can damage important information or even completely destroy your computer. These days you see many cybercrime cases.
Hackers or cyber-criminals create several malicious programs which enter into one’s computers and steal important or personal data. Therefore, precautions like installing an antivirus software should be taken. An antivirus program takes care of your computer from any threats and prevents unauthorized access.

Use an antivirus: Hackers manufacture new viruses and worms which can infect your computer whenever you are using the internet. They often enter through spam emails, but it can also happen while simply browsing infected websites. Such viruses can be very harmful; they destroy data or compromise the security of the entire system. Hence if you are using the internet it is necessary to install one of the best antivirus programs. Some of the best options in order to get rid of potential infections without slowing down your computer include Bitdefender, Kaspersky and Avira. Don’t think that you are not a target for hackers because you are careful, just consider yourself as an attractive target to cyber criminals as anyone else. Taking precautions will help in improving your cyber security, but also everyone else’s too, since everyone participates in the Internet!

Use an anti-spyware: A spyware is nothing but a software that allows hackers to steal important data about someone online activities from one’s computer. They are one of the most common types of infections which go unnoticed by many users. Hackers generally create malicious software which tracks the user on the internet and collects information about their system, their online activities and so on. Spyware can also slow the speed of the system because it uses up resources.

It’s also wise to practice basic password management techniques:

  • Try to use a mix of characters and symbols.
  • Don’t use a same password for more than two sites.
  • Try to change your password every two months.
  • Try not to share your password with others.

Try to back up your data regularly, and most importantly make sure that your antivirus software is always up to date. Use only updated versions of any software you need, as updates frequently fix security vulnerabilities. For sensitive browsing like banking or online shopping, one should use a device that belongs to him/her and only on a network that is trustworthy. If one uses unfamiliar devices or a public computer, there are much higher chances that their sensitive data will be stolen. This could also take place when one uses a free Wi-Fi or untrusted networks.

Activate a firewall: It is one of the primary security measures that is available on every system. Once you initiate the firewall, it automatically supervises the flow of data between the Internet and your system. A firewall scans all the applications which are connected to a network, and the moment it finds any malicious program, it blocks its access and notifies you immediately.

There are a few other things that should be done in order to prevent a potential cyber-crime.

  • Try to scan the file before downloading any attachments from your email, this helps in preventing threats.
  • Don’t open any unspecified attachments or spam mails.
  • Don’t click or open on any pop-ups that come up in the browser window while surfing the web.
